So Abbie, what even is a cozy mystery?

So Abbie, what even is a cozy mystery?

Up until a few years ago I had never even heard of the cozy (or if you're Australian like I am, cosy) mystery book genre. That was until a kind friend shared with me a book she was reading and everything changed, both in my reading and writing life.

What is a cozy mystery?

If you're a fan of mystery novels but prefer a lighter, more heartwarming tone, then cozy mysteries might be your cup of tea. Cozy mysteries, also known as "cozies," are a subgenre of crime fiction that typically feature an amateur detective, a small community setting, and a focus on solving a puzzle rather than graphic violence or explicit content.

What sets cozy mysteries apart?

Cozy mysteries are known for their charming and cozy settings, often in small towns or villages, where everyone knows each other, just like the town of Lilly Pilly Creek featured in my books. The protagonist is usually an ordinary person, like a baker, librarian, retired teacher, or in my books a journalist, who stumbles upon a crime and takes it upon themselves to solve it. These stories are filled with quirky characters, witty dialogue, and a sense of community.

Then what's a paranormal cozy mystery?

Now, imagine taking all the elements of a cozy mystery and adding a supernatural twist. That's where paranormal cozy mysteries come in. In this subgenre, the cozy setting is infused with elements of the paranormal, such as ghosts, witches, or psychic abilities.

Just as I have, many authors will include a ghost as a main character. The protagonist or one of the supporting characters is a ghost who helps solve the mystery from beyond the grave. This adds an extra layer of intrigue and a touch of the supernatural to the already charming and puzzling world of cozy mysteries.

Why do readers love paranormal cozy mysteries?

Paranormal cozy mysteries offer a delightful blend of mystery and the supernatural. They provide a unique and refreshing take on the traditional cozy mystery genre, appealing to readers who enjoy a touch of magic and the unknown. These stories often explore themes of redemption, unfinished business, and the power of friendship, all while keeping readers entertained and guessing until the very end.

Where to start with paranormal cozy mysteries?

If you're intrigued by the idea of paranormal cozy mysteries, there are plenty of fantastic series to dive into. Look for books featuring titles like "Ghostly Bakery Mysteries," "Witchy Librarian Chronicles," or "Spectral Sleuth Investigations." These series will transport you to charming towns filled with quirky characters, ghostly encounters, and intriguing mysteries waiting to be solved.

But of course, you can always start with book 1 in my series, 'The Ghost of Lilly Pilly Creek'.

So, if you're in the mood for a cozy mystery with a twist of the paranormal, give paranormal cozy mysteries a try. You'll be captivated by the enchanting blend of mystery, humour, and supernatural elements that these stories have to offer. Happy reading!
